Tuckpointing in Hesperia CA - fresh mortar joints that hold your brick together

Mortar crumbling or washing out between your bricks? We cut out the worn joints and fill them fresh so the wall stays solid.

Do my brick joints need tuckpointing, or something bigger?

Tuckpointing in Hesperia, also called repointing, means cutting the worn mortar out of the joints in your brick wall and filling them with new mortar, so the wall is tight and solid again without tearing anything down.

Most people call after they notice sand piling up at the base of a wall or mortar they can scrape out with a key, and they want to know if it's a quick fix or a bigger one. The price mostly comes down to how much wall there is, how tall it is, how deep the joints are worn and whether any brick needs work first, while the schedule turns on the weather and on whether the job needs a permit. Your written estimate spells out the scope for your wall, so you know what you're paying for before we start.

What our tuckpointing work includes

Before I quote tuckpointing, I look past the mortar for loose brick, stair-step cracks or leaks, because new joints won't fix trouble that starts somewhere else. If the problem is only in the joints, we cut the worn mortar out and clean the dust and loose bits away so the new mortar has something solid to grab. We dampen the brick so it doesn't pull the water out of the fresh mix, then pack the joints full and tool them to match the rest of the wall, and we clean up before we leave.

When the inspection turns up cracked or loose brick, that's brick repair, and we do it before the new joints go in so they aren't sitting next to a weak spot. A lot of the walls we repoint run along a driveway, and we also lay driveway pavers, so I can look at both on the same visit if yours is worn too.

Tuckpointing and brick work in Hesperia

The City of Hesperia requires a building permit to be issued before construction or remodeling work begins, and only the property owner or the owner's licensed contractor or authorized agent can get one. The city's rule doesn't spell out whether repointing a wall needs a permit, so I don't guess. Before work starts, I check with the city's permit center, or the county building office if your address falls under the county, and when a permit is needed we apply for it as your licensed contractor.

Heat is the other thing we plan around. For masonry work at 90°F to 100°F with wind over 8 mph, one masonry group's guidance calls for using mortar within 2 hours and misting the wall at least 3 times a day until the masonry is three days old, because mortar that dries out too fast won't hold. The city's own hazard plan lists extreme heat alongside earthquakes, wildfire and flooding. We're based in Hesperia and work across the High Desert cities around it, and we see the same sun-worn joints on jobs in Victorville and Apple Valley.

How tuckpointing works with us

  1. Call or send a request

Call (760) 983-7937 or use the form, and we'll set a time for me to come see the wall. We answer seven days a week, 8 AM to 9 PM.

  2. Look the wall over together

I come out, measure, take photos and check the brick as well as the joints. I'll tell you plainly what I'd do and what I wouldn't, including when repointing alone isn't the answer.

  3. Get a written scope and price

You get a written estimate with the scope spelled out, so you can see which joints get cut out, what goes back in and what the price covers. If the job needs a permit, we sort it out with the right office before we start.

  4. Repoint and walk the job

I'm on the job with our crew while the joints get cut out and filled. When it's done, we walk the finished wall with you.

Questions before you book tuckpointing

How do I know if my brick mortar needs repointing?

Your joints need repointing when the mortar is worn back more than 1/4 inch, crumbling, full of holes, or showing hairline cracks or cracks between the brick and the mortar. Leaks, stair-step cracks, loose or cracked bricks and brick faces flaking off are a different story, because those mean the brick needs repair first. Send me photos and I'll tell you which one you're looking at.

How much does tuckpointing cost per square foot?

Repointing brick across the US usually costs about $3 to $25 per square foot, and that's a national range for the work, not a Hesperia figure or our price. Walls tall enough to need scaffolding cost more per square foot than low ones, and deep wear or brick that needs repair adds to it. Your written estimate gives you the price for your wall.

How long does new mortar last after tuckpointing?

Mortar joints typically last more than 25 years, depending on how exposed the wall is and the mortar used, while the brick itself may well last over 100 years. The joints wear out long before the brick does, so repointing is normal upkeep over a wall's life, not a sign something went wrong.

What type of mortar should be used for repointing brick?

The new mortar should be similar to or weaker in strength than the original mortar. A stronger mix puts the load on the thin new joints and can cause the face of the brick to break off, which masons call spalling. Ask any mason which mix they plan to use, and I'll tell you mine at the estimate.

Is tuckpointing the same thing as repointing?

Yes, the industry treats tuckpointing and repointing as the same job of replacing worn mortar in the joints. The word also names an older style that pairs a flush joint colored like the brick with a thin, contrasting mortar strip that makes the joints look very thin.

Can someone without a contractor license do tuckpointing in California?

Only on small jobs, because California's minor work exemption for unlicensed work now tops out at $1,000, up from $500. It applies only when the work needs no permit and the unlicensed person employs no one for the project. A repointing job that needs a permit or a hired helper calls for a licensed contractor.

Why Hesperia homeowners call D&L Hesperia Concrete and Masonry for tuckpointing

  • Owner on site, start to finish

I come out to look at your wall and write the estimate myself, and I'm on the job with our crew while the work gets done. The person who looked at your joints is the one watching them get filled.

  • Doing masonry full time since 2017

I started out patching brick and block walls for neighbors on weekends, then got licensed and went full time in 2017, so that's 9 years now. Brick that's repointed the right way is a big part of what we're known for.

  • Licensed and insured in California

We're licensed and insured. That counts on repointing, because the state's small-job exemption stops covering the work once it needs a permit or a hired helper.

  • Mortar work planned around heat

We schedule the mortar work around the hottest, windiest parts of the day. Joints that dry out too fast don't bond well and wear out early.

On a repointing job, what matters most is the brick behind the mortar and the mix that goes back in, and doing that right can cost a little more up front than a quick patch. Set up your estimate and I'll come take a look.

  • Brick repair

If bricks are cracked, loose or flaking, they need replacing or resetting before new mortar goes in, or the fresh joints end up holding against weak brick.

  • Driveway pavers

Once the wall along your driveway is repointed, a cracked slab next to it stands out, and pavers can be lifted and reset one section at a time.
